What is the V.E.T. Method

As a speech advisor we are often asked, What do you think? or How did I do? After a long journey of fumbling through these questions the V.E.T. Method was developed. It is the quickest way for both leaders and advisors to pinpoint areas for improvement and get a clear sense of how their message will be received.

The V.E.T. Method is a constant comparative approach with a focus on helping a leader to communicate with authenticity. After researching both successful and unsuccessful orators, the three most tangible things that elevate leaders to success is how well a leader communicates Vulnerability, Empathy and Truth.

Vulnerability, Empathy and Truth are the bedrock for authentic communication.

How to apply the V.E.T. Method

The following is the simple process of how the V.E.T. method is used to gather data and measure a leader’s speech for authenticity:

  1. Print a copy of your speech, a PDF works well for digital.
  2. Highlight sentences that expresses Vulnerability (V), Empathy (E) or Truth (T)
  3. Mark each instance in the margins and sum it together for a Coded Total.

This simple Coded Total gives leaders a powerful tool to change hearts and minds.

There are many examples of speeches that have the V.E.T. Method applied to them throughout the site.
